Principles or Victory, Sophie's Choice

Update- I was wrong. Democrats won.

For better or for worse (for worse, I think) the Democrats are going to lose the election this fall. I'll tell you why.

They're going to lose because they want to stick to their basic principles more than they want to win. They've made this obvious recently. John Edwards resigned from the race, leaving only Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to contend for the White House. Anyone who remembers the 90's (that's the 1990's, we'll talk about McKinley and Roosevelt later) knows how hopelessly polarizing the name Hillary Clinton is to voters. There are people who would cancel a hunting trip just to go vote against her. They demonized her to the point that she, like Dan Quayle, is unelectable outside liberal strongholds like New York City. And make no mistake, it was The City that elected her as senator. People who hate McCain's liberal republicanism will come out and vote for him just to vote against her. The Republican Guard won't need Karl Rove to win this time.

Well you say, what about Obama? Barack Hussein Obama?

The United States of America have come a long way in the past fifty years. But we're not there yet. Many a white person, though outwardly liberal and progressive, will in the secrecy of the voting chamber refuse to vote for a black man, despite his qualifications. Then there are all of the Gulf War vets and their families who will not vote for anyone with a Muslim middle name or upbringing. Then there are those who believe he's too young and inexperienced, those in the Washington corridor that know he hasn't got the connections to run the show, etc, etc, etc.

Now, it's true that many a black person will vote for him just to see a black man ascend to the White House. But black people only comprise about 13% of the population. Virtually all Asians will vote against him and against any Democrat.

Enough about population demographics. There's something else to consider.

Have you ever noticed that ALL of our presidents since the beginning have been white, anglo-saxon, protestant men with Masonic affiliations or connections? There was one exception. John Kennedy was Roman Catholic and not affiliated with Skull and Bones nor any Masonic organizations and their related groups. We know how his administration ended. Even some of the presidents that were originally part of the club were punished when they strayed. Just ask presidents Garfield and McKinley. It seems that the presidency is a restricted club. Is this club ready to open its doors to such interlopers? Maybe.

But the odds are now good that we'll have another Republican president with ties to corporations and oil interests. Which means hard times for working folks across the country.

I'm sure I'm right. If I'm wrong, I'll eat my hat. I'll post a note and let you all know how it tastes.
